Chơi pháo, một ông ở Bắc California mất hai bàn tay

SAN JOSE, California (AP) - Một người đàn ông ở Bắc California trong khi đang chuẩn bị đốt pháo thì pháo nổ sớm khiến ông ta mất cả hai bàn tay.

Cảnh sát San Jose cho biết, người đàn ông ở lứa tuổi ngoài 40 và không nguy hiểm đến tính mạng.
Pháo nổ làm mất hai bàn tay của ông ta khi người trong gia đình đang đứng gần đó vào đêm Lễ Ðộc Lập Hoa Kỳ.
Báo San Jose Mercury News trích dẫn lời cảnh sát, cho rằng thứ pháo mà nạn nhân chơi có thể thuộc loại cực mạnh.

Báo Mercury cũng báo cáo có hai người đàn ông khác ở vùng Sunnyvale bị thương nặng hôm Thứ Sáu, khi đang tìm cách đốt một thứ chất nổ trông giống như đạn cối.

Cơ Quan An Toàn Công Cộng Sunnyvale cho hay, hai người đàn ông tuổi 41 và 32 bị thương tại một khu chung cư, khi họ đang tìm cách đốt một loại pháo bất hợp pháp và bị nổ sớm.

Nhân chứng gồm khoảng 20 người đứng xem nói, hai nạn nhân đang chuẩn bị đốt thì pháo nổ khi đang còn cầm trên tay.

Một người mất hết các ngón tay trên bàn tay trái và các đầu ngón của bàn tay phải. Người đàn ông còn lại mất một phần của bàn tay phải. (TP)

California man lighting illegal fireworks loses both hands in blast

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A Northern California man igniting illegal fireworks blew off both of his hands when a device exploded prematurely, police said. 

The man in his 40s is expected to live, Officer Albert Morales of the San Jose Police Department said. The explosive went off in the man's hands as family members stood nearby late on the Fourth of July holiday.

The device was not identified.

"It would have had to have been something pretty powerful," Morales told the San Jose Mercury News.

The newspaper also reported that two other men in an unrelated incident were seriously injured in Sunnyvale while lighting a mortar-like explosive on Friday.

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said that at 10 p.m. the men -- ages 41 and 32 -- were hurt at an apartment complex when the illegal firework ignited prematurely. Witnesses in a group of about 20 people said the men had been trying to ignite the firework when it went off in their hands, officials reported.

One man lost fingers on his left hand and finger tips on the right hand, while officials said the other man lost part of his right hand.

In Southern California, a man lost his thumb Friday after the firecracker he was holding exploded in his hand, Long Beach police said Sunday.
